Surchauffant Campsite near the marinas of Lake Vouglans
Surchauffant Campsite is located on the shores of Lake Vouglans in the Jura. The lake is divided into several zones and has three marinas: Port Saisse, Port Meix and Port Mercantine. They offer a variety of water-based activities to choose from and can also be used by holidaymakers to moor their boats. The three marinas have around 700 mooring rings available to rent by the day, the week or even the year. The many coves along the lake’s shoreline provide places to anchor and an opportunity to see the landscape from a different perspective. The lake also has three managed beaches: Bellecin, Mercantine and Surchauffant.
The reservoir of Vouglans
The dam of Vouglans was built 50 years ago. After coming into service in 1968, it created the third largest reservoir in France and the largest body of water in the Jura’s Pays des Lacs, measuring 35 km in length and containing 600 million cubic metres of water. Bordered on the left bank by the Regional Nature Park of Haut-Jura and, on the right bank, by the Natura 2000 site ‘Petite Montagne’, protected by the French Coastal law (‘Loi Littoral’) and several Sensitive Natural Areas, the Lake Vouglans area boasts a pristine environment with remarkable fauna and flora. Panoramic viewpoints and walking paths offer a chance to contemplate its wooded banks that descend into this huge stretch of turquoise water! The various tourist accommodation zones have turned the lake into an idyllic spot for holidaymakers. Another civil engineering structure is the bridge of Pyle that links the two slopes of the valley, spanning a 351-metre-wide section of the lake and standing 75 metres tall. The bridge was built by EDF at the same time as the hydroelectric dam.
