Activities & tourism in the region of the Lakes of Jura

In the heart of the Jura massif, Lake Vouglans is 35 km long and is France's third largest man-made lake. It is surrounded by a pristine natural environment, mainly formed of rocks, forests and cliffs. The landscapes are stunning and offer a complete change of scenery, particularly the turquoise waters of Lake Vouglans. As a family, as a couple, or with friends, there are many activities to be enjoyed, including walking, cycling, swimming, visiting and various water-based activities. Surchauffant Campsite is located five minutes from Orgelet and its shops, a quarter of an hour from Moirans-en-Montagne and its toy museum, as well as Clairvaux-les-Lacs, half an hour from the Cascades du Hérisson, as well as Lons-le-Saunier, and one hour from the resort of Les Rousses.

Bathing in the turquoise waters of Lake Vouglans

While Lake Vouglans is proud of its wild nature, it offers exclusive facilities to enable you to enjoy it to the full. From Surchauffant Campsite, you have direct access to the beach of Surchauffant, which is supervised from 1 July to 31 August. This sand and pebble beach has both shady and sunny spots to choose from. Two other beaches, which are equally natural and charming, are also accessible: Beach Bellecin and Beach Mercantine. While they are further away from the campsite, they offer different bathing options in the lake’s waters, which can reach up to 25 degrees at the height of summer.

Hiking in the heart of the Jura massif

In a natural environment formed of cliffs and forests, there are plenty of walking paths to follow. Choose your route according to the desired level of difficulty and the landscapes you would like to see. The cliffs of Surchauffant are a magnificent vantage point to admire Lake Vouglans in all its splendour. On either side of the Pont de la Pyle (a bridge spanning Lake Vouglans), you will come across caves, castle ruins and panoramic viewpoints along your walk. You can also discover the “7 contes en balades” story trail for families and set off in search of the lost mermaid… And there is of course the Via Ferrata of Lake Vouglans for seasoned outdoors enthusiasts.
